DOSHISHA UNIVERSITY

The Institute for the Liberal Arts (ILA) is a small, international institute at Doshisha University, a large Japanese university. The ILA offers a Bachelor of Arts degree taught exclusively in English.

Location: The Institute is based at Doshisha’s Karasuma Campus, one of our several campuses, that are mostly located in Kyoto.

Population: 26,000 students, including 1,500 international students

HIROSHIMA UNIVERSITY

Hiroshima University is a national institution founded in 1949, incorporating many different institutions of higher education. HU has been growing ever since; adding new schools, research institutes, and centers. Today it is counted among the national universities and consists of 12 schools and graduate schools, a research institute, research facilities, and affiliated hospitals.

Location: Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture

KYOTO UNIVERSITY OF ADVANCED SCIENCE (KUAS)

KUAS can look back on a 50-year history as an accredited private educational institution in the academic heartland of Japan.The school features an engineering program that is closer to the manufacturing industry than ever before, in a country that is globally acclaimed for its engineering ingenuity.

Location: Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture (Main Campus) and Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture (2nd Campus)
KUAS University Students: Approx. 3,600 students (approx. 270 international students)

KYUSHU UNIVERSITY

Kyushu University, or Kyushu U, is by general consensus one of Japan's foremost research universities. Originally founded in 1911 as one of the seven imperial universities, it has since nurtured countless educators, researchers, and medical practitioners who have made positive contributions to society in Japan and beyond.  
Comprehensive in its scope, Kyushu U has 12 undergraduate and 18 graduate schools, in addition to the university hospital and a handful of world class research centers.

INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY (ICU)

ICU has been a pioneer in liberal arts education in Japan since its founding in 1953 and aims to cultivate “responsible global citizens”, who will contribute to world peace and to help people from diverse backgrounds live together harmoniously. 
ICU has one College of Liberal Arts and Graduate School of Arts and Science. At the college, instead of requiring students to select their intended fields of study right away when they enroll, ICU uses the major system to enable students to explore different academic areas and find the ones that they want to pursue at deeper levels. Courses are held both in Japanese and English, promoting bilingual education. Students enroll from all over the world with various educational background regardless of nationality.

LAKELAND UNIVERSITY

Lakeland University Japan (LUJ) is the branch campus of Lakeland University (WI) and we are one of only two foreign universities in Japan, which was founded in Tokyo in 1991. It’s the best of both worlds—experience life in Japan while receiving top-tier instruction in English, alongside students from all over the world. No matter your intended major or career, we are committed to preparing you for life after graduation through a variety of degree paths. A fully accredited four-year degree can be completed at the Tokyo campus or in the United States at Lakeland University in Wisconsin or Virginia Wesleyan University in Coastal Virginia. A new partnership between Lakeland University and Virginia Wesleyan University will expand opportunities for students attending the campus in Tokyo that was founded by Lakeland.

NAGOYA UNIVERSITY

Nagoya University (NU), founded in 1871, is a nationally-funded and research-intensive university with strong focus on science and engineering. NU plays home to more than 16,000 students from Japan and around the world. The International Undergraduate Programs, currently offering 11 majors fully taught in English, have been integrated in October 2011 and every year around 50 undergraduate students enrol. Since all programs are taught in English, no Japanese language proficiency is required at the time of admission.

Location: Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture

Population: ≈17,000 (≈16% international)

NAGOYA UNIVERSITY OF COMMERCE & BUSINESS (NUCB UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOL)

A private university with over 80 years of history specializing in business. We were the first undergraduate institution in Japan to be awarded AACSB accreditation.

Location: Nisshin, Aichi Prefecture

Population: 3,000 (~20% International)

OKAYAMA UNIVERSITY

National University, dating back to 1870, located in Western Japan. 11 Faculties; 8 Graduate Schools; 1 Special Program. About 50% of IB students from IB schools worldwide. Students from IB schools and Article-1 Schools are eligible to apply. We accept: IB Diploma/ IB certificate/ Japanese Dual Language IB Diploma.

Location: Okayama, Okayama Prefecture
Population: ≈10,000 
IB students can apply to all 11Faculties and 1 special program.

OSAKA UNIVERSITY

Osaka University is a comprehensive research university with 11 schools, 16 graduate schools, 25 research institutes, and two university hospitals. Osaka University has two undergraduate programs in English, the Human Sciences International Undergraduate Degree Program and the International Undergraduate Program in Science. The University also offers nine graduate programs in the sciences in English resulting in Masters or PhD degrees, including programs in engineering and information technology.

Location: Northern Osaka Prefecture

Population: ≈23,000 (≈11% international)

RITSUMEIKAN UNIVERSITY

Ritsumeikan University is a leading comprehensive private university in west Japan. It offers English-language based programs including dual/joint undergraduate degree programs in which students can earn bachelor’s degrees from both Ritsumeikan and partner universities abroad.

RITSUMEIKAN ASIA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

Located in the hot spring town of Beppu Japan, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University is a dynamic, multicultural learning environment with half of its student body representing over 90 countries and regions. Visit their website to learn more.

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, JAPAN CAMPUS (TUJ)

 Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) is the branch campus of Temple University (USA) and is the oldest and largest foreign university in Japan. Founded in Tokyo in 1982, TUJ is the first institution to be officially recognized as a Foreign University, Japan Campus by Japan's Ministry of Education. It remains the only university in Japan to offer comprehensive programs in English for degree and non-degree students, and where students can earn American bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees without leaving Japan. The new campus is located in Setagaya, Tokyo. 

TOHOKU UNIVERSITY

Tohoku University (TU) is established in 1917 as the third national university in Japan following The University of Tokyo and Kyoto University. Since its establishment TU has been consistently ranked amongst the top academic institutions in Japan, and was ranked #1 in Times Higher Education’s Annual Japan University Rankings in 2020 & 2021. TU has 10 undergraduate schools, 15 graduate schools, 3 professional graduate schools and 6 research institutes. TU offers three international undergraduate degree courses fully taught in English, and every year around 35 students enrolled from overseas.

Location: Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture
Enrollment: ~18,000 (~16% international)
